KJ, the extremists are in Umno

your say ‘The real extremists and terrorists in multiracial Malaysia are born, bred and indoctrinated by none other than Umno, especially under the reign of Mahathir Mohamad.’

On Zaid vs Khairy on Al Jazeera

Hamisu: It's true! Khairy Jamaluddin happily lives in la-la land. First off, when we look at multiracial Malaysia, who are the extremists? I can see there was a clarion call to bathe the keris with Chinese blood. This happened more than once. Would this act not amount to terrorism?

Secondly, let's look at the recent Utusan Malaysia fiasco. In order to ‘preserve harmony’, Utusan decides to fan racial sentiments. Who is actually out to get the Malays? Search within your own kinsmen for the answer.

ISA is nothing but rubbish. According to Khairy's dictionary, extremists and terrorists seem to encompass people who speak for natural justice, people who would like to create Bangsa Malaysia, people who abhor corruption, people who have a better vision of a non-racial Malaysia.

Khairy should wake up. The real extremists and terrorists in multiracial Malaysia are born, bred and indoctrinated by none other than Umno, especially under the reign of Mahathir Mohamad. Look no further. The real terrorists and extremists are in Umno’s own backyard.

Lonestar: I, for one, awaits the ISA amendments with bated breath. Knowing the past actions of the BN government, the rakyat will not be consulted. Our MPs will be given the amendments at the last moment before they are allowed to be debated for a matter of hours and with the BN majority, the amendments would be passed. Remember the recent passage of the DNA bill?

What is wanted is for the abhorrent ISA to be abolished in its present form where the rakyat can be ISAed to their own protection! Have a new anti-terror act if the rakyat deems it a necessity. Even then have the rakyat consulted or at the least their MPs allowed to have inputs before the act is formulated and passed.

The ISA in its present form and usage has to go. And to achieve that, the peaceful marches need to continue. Those who are pro-ISA are also welcomed to continue their peaceful marches.

LC: I read with indignation DPM Muhyiddin Yassin's statement that 'The rally against the Internal Security Act (ISA) in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday was aimed at provoking the police into invoking the law which allowed for detention without trial’.

He added further that there was no need for the rally as PM Najib had given an assurance that the Act would be reviewed and the government was in the process of looking at it.

Well, Mr DPM, why are you so fearful of a group of citizens wanting to take to the streets to protest and send a memorandum to the Agong to asked for the ISA to be abolished? Could you not just instruct the police to direct the traffic and guide these citizens who were being well-controlled by PAS' Unit Amal all the way to Istana Negara to hand in their memorandum?

Why do you have to tear gas and water cannon them, arrest them for wearing black anti-ISA T-shirts or even just carrying a black T-shirt? Please-lah, don't be so feudal with us citizens... your mandate to rule after the 13th GE is in our hands.

CLK: There were two demonstrations on Aug 1 - an anti-ISA and a pro-ISA. True, there were only 20-30 people who supported the 'zalim' Act. But why none of them were arrested? The police even arrest about 150 anti-ISA people before the gathering while these people had not involved themselves in the gathering. Isn't that abuse of power?

Fairplay:

The riot police made Pakatan Rakyat's day when they used excessive force and violence on a peaceful anti-ISA march to present a petition to the Agong to seek abolishment of a draconian and obnoxious law which has been used to clamp down on political opponents of the ruling party.

The PM and his cousin, the home minister, think that citizens in this country are dumb to assume that whatever happened at the rally will only backfire on the opposition. All the damage of property and economic losses in the vicinity of the attempted rally could have been prevented if the police had allowed the peaceful march to take place as they only wanted to march in an orderly fashion to the palace to present the petition.

However, the police locked down the whole city even as far as Petaling Jaya, causing - as the BN related press said - an estimated RM200 million losses to the nation and business community (I don't know where they got this figure from but compared to the corruption in PKFZ affair, it is minute in scale.

Around 600 decent citizens who wanted to exercise their right to a peaceful assembly were arrested including anyone wearing anti-ISA T-shirt, and held in filthy lockups with common criminals.

It is time that the government recognises that such use of police force will not deter the citizens from clamouring for their rights under the constitution, which is unjustly denied to them. Let there be no one detained unjustly without a proper trial in a court of law and is deemed innocent until proven guilty.

Strong: MCA and Gerakan had been very local and take every opportunity to force DAP to take a stand on PAS. What about the articles by Utusan Malaysia ? Where are MCA, MIC and Gerakan on this issue?

For those ISA-loving people who said such an Act shall remain to protect the stability of the nation, why don't you condemn the use of ISA to lock the Utusan writer/editor who had clearly created disunity and harmony? Shame on you and 1Malaysia!

Raymond: The people joining the GMI peaceful gathering were arrested for "illegal gathering" because they did not get police permit. Now the police say want to charge Pakatan Rakyat leaders for supporting the gathering.

But what about the gathering by Gerakan to submit a memorandum to the King one day before the GMI gathering? They also did not have police permit but why the police never say they want to charge party leader Koh Tsu Koon and the organiser of the march? Is it because Gerakan is from Barisan Nasional and Koh is a minister?

Opportunist: I am shocked at the comparison of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and Patriot Act (PA) to our ISA. It is an insult to our intelligence. The ATA and PA do not put behind bars an opposition member of parliament with no proof of 'threat to national security' and a young reporter with the excuse of "protecting her". Were they terrorists or unpatriotic?
