If we review the year 2008, it will go down in the history of this nation as one of its bleakest, when the most darkest hours of our history are to be found.
First, there was the rape of democracy when ordinary citizens in peaceful marches were attacked by the very people put in place to protect them and their rights - the police. Yes, in 2008, the police force showed itself to be an authoritarian force that bows to the powers-that-be and who are willing to break the laws of the land to please their political masters.
In the Anwar Ibrahim case, this was so blatant, in the RPK case it was so blatant and in the case of Hindraf it was not only blatant but vulgar. They broke all rules when in the previous year they attacked persons who marched in peace only to hand a petition to the Queen of England via the British High Commissioner.
Pursuant to the violent attacks on these citizens by the police, the Hindraf leaders were arrested under the ISA after the government made ‘Bushy’ claims that Hindraf had been linking itself with the LTTE of Sri Lanka,
But when the whole world took notice they withdrew with their tails between their legs but in total defiance of world opinion, detained these innocent persons in our society whose only fault was to voice their frustration on being marginalised.
The call of Hindarf was Makkal Sakti and that call rang out amongst the Malays, the Chinese and all other races and this government was handed such a beating in the March 8 general elections, a hiding that shook the very foundations of Umno.
The defeat was enough to get Najib Abdul Razak cracking for he knew that if it went another round with Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at the helm he (Najib) would be a goner, and that was something he could not take.
Najib wants to be Number One because he then won’t have to answer to the rakyat Najib has a lot of answering to do to the rakyat , so much of dirty linen hidden in the closet which have apparently become exposed..
It was Najib who came out in the first place to try and block the Lingam tape inquiry and it was Najib who said there was no need for an apology from the government. And now I believe it is him who is forced Abdullah to water down the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and Judicial Appointment Commission (JAC) bills.
The excuse given was that they may not get the support required to be passed, but in my in opinion they would not have got the support from Najib and his men - not from the opposition.
The majority of Umno men and Sarawak BN MPs would not have supported anything but much diluted versions because they have too much at stake if it got passed.
