No elements of religion, occultism in yoga

We refer to the Malaysiakini report Coming soon: Fatwa on yoga.

The recent statements regarding yoga have attracted a lot of attention and we as the organisation responsible for self-regulation of yoga and representing all branches of yoga in Malaysia, herewith would like to categorically state that Hatha yoga is free from all elements of religion and occultism.

It is based on the sound principles of mind-body training for achieving balanced physical and mental health. There is no chanting, praying, or worship involved at all.

The other main branches of yoga namely Raja, Jnana, Karma and Bhakti Yoga are also free from religious concepts as these branches of yoga are non-sectarian and are much older than the current organisations or individuals who may be promoting a modified version of these sciences.

We are planning to compile a directory of yoga centres, organisations and instructors of all branches of yoga and this directory will state in detail the information on what they each offer.

This will enable a clear decision-making process as the directory will have complete facts and individuals will be able to investigate the organisations through the directory before joining any yoga organisation or centre.

In order to compile this directory, we will need feedback from all parties concerned.

As the body responsible for all branches of yoga in Malaysia namely Hatha, Raja, Jnana, Karma and Bakti plus the hundreds of sub-yogic sciences, we welcome all to be part of our organisation.

This invitation is open to all teachers, instructors and practitioners as well. We have also engaged in dialogues and briefings with various bodies and organisations, and further would like to state that we are available for expert testimony, information, talks, briefing or consultation with any regulatory body or non-governmental organisation.

The writer is president, Malaysian Yoga Society (MYS) and Malaysian Association of Yoga Instructors (Mayi).
