When I read the news that thousands of UiTM students protested over the suggestion to open up a small entry for 'non-bumiputeras', I simply felt sympathy for these people. Look, these students are the typical products created by the BN government over past 50 years. They are typically:
1. Ignorant - I bet 99% of them may not know that they are studying in a world’s only single-race college. While the whole world is talking about globalisation and cultural exchange, our great BN government has placed these pupils in a secluded campus.
Dear undergrads, this is nothing to be proud of but in fact something to be really ashamed of. A university is supposed to be a miniature society for undergrads to get themselves to be ready before entering the real world. Please find me a world that only consists of one race and without competition.
2. Lack of confidence - The protest can simply be interpreted as a clear indication of lack of self- confidence. Why did they protest? I can't help imagine that they did because even if only 5% of Chinese and Indian students are let into UiTM, most probably their academic results will put all the rest of their classmates to shame.
You may argue that I'm racist and biased but you can't stop people from thinking that this is the main reason why these students protested - they are kiasu or scared of losing to others. Dear UiTM students, for your information, in all other universities and colleges in the world, all the students enter on virtue of their academic results. UiTM is one university which puts your skin colour first and academic results second.
3. Just like those Umnoputeras and their cronies, these students are shameless in asking for more crutches and benefits while enjoying all the privileges that others do not have. When people tell them 'Hey, it's about time to walk on your own feet', they cry, protest and show anger. Very soon, they will no longer be happy with the crutch and will start asking for a wheelchair.
I'm not being sarcarstic. What good does it bring to Malaysia if the nation keeps producing thousands and thousands of incompetent graduates? Look at the 90% unemployment rate for fresh graduates and you know what I mean. Just to give you an example, not too long ago, my company interviewed a fresh graduate who majored in horticulture.
When the manager tried to give him a little test by showing a photo of oil palm, with the hope that he could tell him the palm's botanical name, guess what? The candidate just looked at the manager and smiled. He couldn't even recognise that is was an oil palm! Let alone spelling out the botanical name.
I'm not telling you a made-up story because I happened to be the manager who interviewed this candidate. If a horticulture student could not recognise the most common agricultural plant in Malaysia, I would not be surprised if similar cases happen to graduates who major in medicine, engineering, etc. Carry out a simple survey and you will know how difficult it is for a company to get a competent graduate from Malaysia.
Most of the time we have no choice but to just compromise with what we can get. That may explain why the average starting salary of Malaysia graduate is only about RM1,500 to RM1,800. Simply because they do not deserve anything higher than that.
While calling for the people to unite together, the BN government has been dividing the Malaysian people into groups over the past 50 years. They like to make a Malaysian into a ‘non-xxx’ this or a ‘non-xxx’ that. Look at the political parties - Umno does not accept a ‘non- bumiputra’, MCA does not take ‘non-Chinese’, MIC is a no-no for a ‘non-Indian’, PAS is of course not for ‘non-Muslim’.
And now you expect UiTM to open for ‘non-bumiputeras’? Even if it really happens, I bet very few of the Chinese/Indians would like to send their children to UiTM. Unless they do not have a better choice, why would they choose a university like UiTM? Imagine what kind of discrimination a non-Malay student would receive if he/she studies at UiTM?
So honestly, if UiTM wants to keep itself just as it is, just let it be. But, as a ‘non-xxx Malaysian’ who contributes his income tax every year, please stop using my hard-earned money for UiTM or any other similar organisations which do not welcome ‘non-xxx Malaysians’. My income tax shall and shall only be spent for true Malaysians.
