I refer to the Malaysiakini report Nazri: Postal voting to stay .
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Abdul Aziz has rightly pointed out that this was the only way that Malaysians abroad could exercise their rights in elections.
Nazri had also said that abolishing the postal vote system is not possible as it is the basic right of Malaysian citizens abroad like soldiers and their spouses, police officers, as well as other government servants and students.
But, how about the rights of the thousands of Malaysians who are working abroad legally but are denied their rights to vote via post? We would like to cast our votes during elections and perform our duties as responsible citizens of this country, but we are denied the right to do so.
Many do not know that currently, only Malaysian students and government servants (including soldiers) abroad can cast their votes via post. The rest of us who are working in the private sector or on business attachments overseas cannot vote.
I do not understand the rationale of this for isn't it quite obvious that our voting rights as enshrined in the federal constitution are being denied?
Right now, I am staying in the UK, and I can vote in the UK parliamentary and local council elections. The English law provides me the right to vote as a citizen of a Commonwealth nation, but sadly my own country does not allow me to vote whilst I am still here.
When asked by a backbencher on how the government planned to improve the postal voting system, Nazri actually asked for recommendations on improvements.
My input to that will be, please allow all Malaysians voters who are abroad to lawfully vote during elections.
I am more than ready to travel all the way to the Malaysian High Commission in London to cast my vote.
