Even before the news broke on Anwar's alleged sodomy of his aide, I like many other Malaysians had come to the conclusion that it was only a matter of time before Pak Lah's government will fall.
It was like watching the proverbial wreck in slow motion, riveted by its inevitability. And it doesn't need a genius to figure out that the catalyst and mastermind to the impending crash of the Barisan Nasional is none other than its prodigal son, Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar is no angel but he brings with him the promise of a better future for all Malaysians, something the present government has lost its credibility to claim.
It may turn out to be a false dawn if he gets to power but the majority of Malaysians are now fed up and willing to try something different and be damned with the consequences.
This government has no way to counter this rising tide of hope and yearn for change. It is what Anwar represents that is working against the BN - not the man himself.
That is why taking him out this way will only infuriate more Malaysians, regardless of whether he is guilty or not.
For if Anwar is to be found guilty, the evidence has to be more airtight than the last time he was charged in order to convince the skeptical masses, and if the case fizzles out the BN will similarly fizzle out.
Has Pak Lah forgotten that the last time Anwar was found guilty of sodomy and put in jail, it was the non-Malays that saved the BN in the general elections then?
This time he does not have that luxury. Its heads, Anwar wins and tails, BN loses.
A smart leader would have killed this story right off but unfortunately for Pak Lah and Najib, they are not that. The wheels have only ground harder and the day of reckoning for this government is speeding ever nearer.
