I refer to the letter The dilemma of 'Malaysian' scholars .
Please give me a reasonable answer, my government. First of all, I would like to express my dissatisfaction regarding PSD's awarding of scholarships. My application has been turned down by PSD and I simply cannot understand why. This fact had hurt my heart excruciatingly.
My dream is to study abroad with a scholarship as I am not ‘born with a golden spoon in my mouth’. My dad is a lorry driver and my mom is a housewife. I have tried my best to divide my time in order to help my dad, doing my revision, schoolwork and maintaining my activeness in extracurricular activities.
I have been studying very hard for the past 11 years of my schooling life to achieve good results as I need a scholarship very badly mainly to lighten the financial burden facing by my family currently.
However, I was unsuccessful in my application for a PSD scholarship. Why? Although I failed, students with only 7 A's and 8 A's have been selected? Are they better than me?
I managed to secure straight A's (11 A's) with an exclusive A1 for 1119 in my SPM 2007 and I was selected for National Service too. My name was shortlisted for PSD, TNB and Petronas scholarship interviews yet I did not even get a single offer. Worse, my application for matriculation or entry into local institutions of higher learning also failed.
How could this happen to me when on the other hand, students who managed to obtain only 2 A's got offered matriculation and college places? Is this what we Malaysians call fair?
Besides being a straight A's scorer in SPM 2007, I was a Librarian for my school and held a school club’s treasurer’s post for five years. Apart from that, my extracurricular CGPA is 9.00/10.00. I involved myself actively in extracurricular activities as the government always emphasised to us that such activities are very important.
I represented my school in badminton and athletics and besides this I was a drummer for my school band. That’s not all. I also held a post in my school magazine and represented my school at district-level quiz competitions.
All for what?
I really do hope PSD will recognise my 11 years of hard work and my family's economic background. I really hope that my dream will not be engulfed by darkness or be shattered again. Please assist and give me a chance, PSD.
