NS: Our money used to endanger our children

I refer to from Impossible to have 'zero death' for NS .

It seems that you disagree for the NS to be demolished but for it to be re-examined on how to prevent further deaths. Your say it is impossible to have 'zero deaths' but at least you agree there shouldn't be any death toll up to 20. At this high rate, there is a lot that is running through the minds of the parents. What action has been taken or what studies that has been done on this death rate? If any related action plan was taken, kindly share it to the world in order to gain more support and build confidence in the parents (that is, if there is any at the moment).

Let's get to the basic purpose of the programme - has it benefitted the youth and nation? Have there been any significant changes? If the programme has so much of potential danger, why should the programme be in place at all? All these years of running the NS has only increased the chances of deaths. I'm pretty sure that there are a lot of youths who are interested in such activities but they rather explore it somewhere else where it is more 'safe'.

On the writer’s opinion that death can take place anywhere, I agree. But isn't it the responsibility of the camp officers to bring those who are ill directly to the local hospital to seek better medical attention rather then attending to the trainees themselves? When will they learn that the tiniest indication of illness should taken seriously?

All the while, the argument has been that pre-medical checks for the trainees are too expensive etc. In the Dewan Rakyat we heard of the amount of taxpayer's money used to run this programme. One might ask that with such a big utilisation of money, why can’t they equip the NS camps with doctors and betters medical assistance?

I do not see any action being taken. Do we the parents have the option not to send our loved ones for NS? NO. We are dictated to follow what has been instructed by the authorities. Just follow as they say which is not democratic at all.

And why the writer’s question of the opposition’s involvement, I ask him. At least they are trying to voice out what the parents want. Surely that is the reason they were elected. It was not them who politicised the issue but several individuals like the writer. If not for them, who is going to seek justice at all for us? Surely not the writer.

Do we want to see another 'illegal' rally from the parents to abolish this NS? And even then, will our leaders even listen or come for a discussion? The only thing were are doing is to desperately voice out in the alternative media. I hope someone can do something as after all, our own money is being used to endanger the lives of our children.
