We all know that in the life of all of us there is a catalogue of missed opportunities and that only those who do grab them without hesitation will end up winners be it a parking space, a business opportunity, a women who truly loves you, etc.
Of course, these spur of the moment decisions do sometimes end up in disappointment and disasters, and insofar as business opportunities are concerned it could mean a lot of life savings going down the tube.
Still before I go off the tangent, let me be specific about the opportunity which is presenting itself to our prime minister who is, many of us agree, facing all kinds of aggravation; some of his own doing but many which are caused by his own trusted men in and outside the cabinet.
In the area of corruption alone, Malaysia, despite Pak Lah's personal crusade, still occupies a dismal position on Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index. At home, his own deputy minister in the Internal Security Ministry and another, the head of the ACA himself, are facing corruption allegations.
These are the things Pak Lah can do without especially at the time when he is seeking a fresh mandate. To overcome all these problems, may I offer a 'Kennedy solution' to Pak Lah. At the moment, he does not trust that many people. For instance, there are still, seemingly, many Mahathirites in his cabinet as well as in the civil service.
So why can't he not put his trust in his own son-in-law Khairy Jamaluddin? Make him the director-general of the ACA to cleanse Pak Lah's administration of all the scumbag and improve Malaysia's international ranking in corruption perception.
The late US President John F Kennedy did this by putting his brother Robert as US attorney -general to face down the Mafia and other mobsters. If not gunned down, Robert would certainly have made it to the Oval Office.
But the first things first. Pak Lah should first ask KJ to declare all his assets since the time he became the son-in-law. And KJ, too, should ask Pak Lah and all their immediate relatives to do the same. Only then, the public will have faith in KJ.
And KJ (who everybody knows wants to be Malaysia's youngest PM) should make this sacrifice for the country and if he succeeds in his ACA job, then the nation's' top job is his.
See how Rudolf Giuliani started as New York's attorney-general and after a brilliant performance as the governor of New York, he is now one of those who might win the Republican nomination for the US president.
I am not sure about the prerequisites to be the chief of the ACA. If the man must be from the police force, I think this practice should be stopped because how can an ex-cop catch a fellow cop (among others)?
The first ACA chief was the late Harun Hashim from the judiciary. And if Nor Mohamad Yakcop could become a contract second finance minister, a similar arrangement could be made for KJ.
After all, so many chairpersonships of government agencies are distributed among Umno men.
