Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi says he is in charge and firmly in control - reform takes time and each step must be carefully considered. What has changed in the last three years has been significant including the greater room for expression in our local newspapers. Perhaps for this, I must give credit where it is due.
However, what changes have been made to ensure the efficiency of the Royal Malaysian Police? The IPCMC has yet to be set up despite all the hype. We have slipped in the global corruption index and this is evident as we go about our lives and business in Malaysia. The many reports of corruption have not been investigated and no prosecution has been made. One example is the Auditor-General's recent report on the abuse of state development funds for personal use.
There are also many allegations of wrongdoings in the past - the sacking of the Lord President and other Federal Court judges in 1988, the questionable sacking and prosecution of Anwar Ibrahim in 1998, the allegations of naturalising illegal immigrants in Sabah by the millions code-named Project 'M' and the many other abuses and losses in government-linked companies like Perwaja, Renong, MAS, Plus, Proton, etc.
The PM cannot continue to drag his feet on these issues and still have any credibility left for his reform promises. It's all lip service and clichs we rather not know about.
Until PM Abdullah steps up his effort in cleaning up and righting the wrongs of the last administration by investigating all allegations of corruption and squandering of public funds, the BN government in my eyes continues lose all credibility to govern.
Those responsible must be brought to justice and any money channeled outside of the country must be paid back with retribution. The sins of the past will continue to haunt PM Abdullah until he acts, and acts quickly.
