Putera Umno's mission to reform the Mat Rempits into overnight heroes and glory boys is at best a futile one. At worst, it's akin to playing with fire - harmless when controlled, devastating when it gets out of hand.

Be that as it may, one wonders why, of all people, were illegal bikers chosen? Maybe I am missing the point, but this is one endeavour that seems bereft of any noble intention. It would be a different matter if, say, Putera Umno lent a hand to other groups shunned by society - the destitute, the jobless, reformed drug addicts, sex workers or the disabled.

Perhaps there is another side to the story. Let's assume that Putera Umno has no intention whatsoever of curbing the mob and ruffian mentality of the Mat Rempits. That such bottled and furious energy could actually be harnessed to serve another purpose, besides illegal racing of course. Now imagine this goon squad serving a political party and becoming the "eyes and ears" of the police. Frightening? You bet.

Yes, maybe I'm truly missing the point of all of this completely. Maybe someone up there has good (albeit hidden) intentions despite what others, including the police, think of such a seemingly absurd scheme. Maybe that someone has a magic formula that can turn raging rebels into docile creatures at the swish of a wand. Having said that, it is also timely to remind such people that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
