When the Chinese community demands for more Chinese schools to be built, why must others disagree with the idea? Building more Chinese schools does not in anyway erode the rights of bumiputeras.
The prime minister - or Umno Youth for that matter - should not merely use 'national integration' as an excuse, or only look at national integration from a Malay perspective.
Yes, we have our Mara colleges, our religious schools and bumiputera policies to help our Malay students. But no, we also want to integrate the other races through the national schools. Now, now, aren't we unreasonable?
Even if we ban all vernacular schools in the country, it will not mean that national integration will be achieved. Students would not integrate if they feel they are being denied equal chance to universities or government assistance.
We are tax-paying citizens and it is our right to demand for more schools of our choice. We, as parents, want to have a say in how we educate our children. We hope that PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will not see the issue of national integration just from a Malay perspective but from a national perspective.
Yes, some of our money has been used to help the bumiputera students, to build mosques and even religious institutions. But we're okay with that. While we actually mind that there are so few places of worship that have been built by the government for the other communities, still, we can live with that.
But please don't stop us from choosing what is best for our children. This is something that is very sensitive to the Chinese community and I hope that just as the sensitivities of the Malays must be respected, the same would go for the Chinese and Indian communities in Malaysia.
