Homosexuality, as a punching bag, is flavour of the month. In this part of the world, getting carried away with condemning such a 'deviant' behaviour comes with little baggage for the bigot.

In some quarters, this bigotry is an act to be encouraged and applauded. It might even be suggestive that it feeds certain zealots with an aura of righteousness and pride to pick on others.

In the history of humankind, we have seen numerous of such insular discrimination against groups of people, levelled in the name of God. Slaves, primitive tribes, the underclass, non-believers, ethnic groups, the deformed, the mentally infirm, women, pioneers, scientists and just about any party with a trait or position that distinguishes them as different were game.

As more and more forms of bigotry thankfully become unfashionable, this sanctimonious crowd finds homosexuality as one of the last bastions to practise their lynching skills on. Like the other bigots before them, they practise a pattern that is instantly recognisable. They will compare their quarry with animals and the 'standards' of nature.

Presumptuously thinking of scoring points with their Maker, they often reproduce snippets of holy text in verbatim to support their prejudice. Never mind that holy texts, as voluminous as they are often ambiguous, reap rich harvest for just about anybody who might seek to name-drop God on his/her side of an argument.

Adherents should not quench their thirst for morality at the expense of others who live a different way of life. Especially a way of life that means no harm to anyone, least of all to them.

They should instead ask themselves if their stance is compatible with the very core of their beliefs and universal values that encourage respect and compassion towards others. They should question whether such ill will and enmity on their part poison the central tenets of their own beliefs.

Most importantly however, they ought to stop simulating God in their ventriloquist acts.
