During the Bersih rally on July 9 three groups of security forces gathering in Kuaka Lumpur were noted. All three together with the police security measures, that can be said to have contributed to the traffic disruptions, inconvenience to public and losses to businesses on that day.
However, TV and other mainstream media with BN politicians and those aligned to them, continue to report that the group responsible for the disruptions, inconveniences and losses in KL on was Bersih 2.0 comprising over 60 NGOs whose members include many distinguished citizens who are titled persons, professionals and other leaders including political leaders from PKR, PAS and DAP.
The government-controlled TV stations’ newscasters, and those responsible for the news content, seem to have selective observation faculties and memory, possibly due to orders from higher-ups.
The other two groups involved that day, the 'Patriot' headed by Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Perkasa that is perceived to be aligned to Umno were equally responsible for the disruptions to the city, with thousands of their supporters who had gathered near Maybank/Puduraya/Bukit Bintang areas.
Also those on the streets were mostly ordinary Malaysians, many of whom were Malays. So to refer to the Bersih 2.0 group as 'opposition' in the news is misinformation.
The newscasters also failed to clarify as to under what category Patriot and Perkasa members fell under. If the media refer to Bersih supporters as ‘opposition’ then these two should rightfully be referred to as ‘government’.
RTM should provide balanced views and be impartial to politics. Maybe this partiality is responsible for the viewers having little confidence in the truth of their news and has sent the rakyat to the cybermedia in search of the truth.
