I would like to share my experience with a police woman whom I had the (mis)fortune of meeting.

On Sept 30, I went to the Midvalley Megamall police station to assist my friend in making a police report. The details as to why we were there are insignificant, but this story is as to how a policewoman ended up calling me ‘perempuan gila’ (crazy woman) and threatened to arrest me. It’s quite a story.

As we walked into the police station, this policewoman was chatting away on the phone while an old man was seated in front of her. This went on for five minutes. She then proceeded to end the call, made some small talk with the man and he proceeded to leave.

She did not ask us why we were there nor did she acknowledge our presence. So I went up to her and made some enquiries. She asked two halfhearted questions and then proceeded to make a phone call on her mobile. She then continued to chat until I took down her details on a piece of paper.

As soon as she saw me doing that, she ended her call and shouted at me for taking down her indentity details. She asked if I didn’t see her on the phone. I told her that yes, I could see that she was happily chatting on her mobile phone while two people were waiting to make a police report.

She then accused me of trying to tell her how to do her job and then even threatened to arrest me. I then gently reminded her that I was aware of my rights as I was a practising lawyer. If she insisted on arresting me for whatever reason, it would be her right to do so.

She then retorted saying that she had been in the service for 20 years. My answer to that? I remarked on her still just sitting behind the counter taking reports despite 20 years of service.

What happened next? She then proceeded to call police security personnel to get this ‘crazy woman’ out of the station. I refused to budge.

At the end of it, with the police report in hand, we left the police station with two sets of eyes glaring and burning a big hole in my back. What a joke.

I have proceeded to make an official complaint against her. Let’s see if anything actually happens.
